When it comes to movies, sometimes it’s not the lead performer that sticks in one’s mind, but the locations on show.
Although in an age of computer generated images it is often difficult to tell what is real and what is not, in many cases it is dramatic and breath-taking scenery that offers the best ‘performance’ on the big screen.
Since the ‘Golden Age’ of Hollywood, famous film locations have lured holidaymakers, from bustling cityscapes and famous national landmarks through to quiet and quaint remote paradise settings.
Monuriki, Koh Phi Phi Leh and Bora Bora are jaw-dropping locations of the paradise variety. They have been seen in a number of high-profile films and could easily form part of a luxurious holiday package.
Monuriki is a volcanic islet, situated just off Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu. Chosen as the main setting for the Cast Away movie featuring Tom Hanks, the mountainous island is home to white sand beaches and lagoons, as well as tropical flora and fauna. Monuriki is just one of three islands where the protected Fiji Crested Iguana (Brachylophus vitierisis) lives. Private charters and special ‘Cast Away Tours’ can be booked, where visitors can explore the island on foot, as well as take part in activities such as snorkelling in the marine reserve.
The Thai island of Koh Phi Phi Leh featured prominently in The Beach, a film adaption of the bestselling book. Although there has been some controversy surrounding the beach used in the film since the devastation caused by the 2004 tsunami, the famous Koh Phi Phi Leh landmark has since regained its natural shape.
Bora Bora has a long history as a film location - perhaps most notably in the 1962 version of Mutiny in the Bounty starring Marlon Brando - and is now a popular holiday destination. The first ever over-the-water bungalows were built here on stilts above the lagoon, and this type of accommodation is now standard across the island’s resorts. Bora Bora’s lagoon is its most treasured feature, which offers visitors the chance to snorkel, scuba dive and shark dive in addition to the popular activities of kitesurfing and sailing.
All of these fantastic locations offer a genuine taste of movie magic, so take a look and immerse yourself in a world of real star quality.
