With 2011 coming to an end, BlackBerry makers RIM will be glad to see the back of the last 12 months and will be hoping for better tidings in the New Year.
After disappointing sales of the Playbook, BlackBerry's attempt to conquer the tablet market, and a BBM network failure that seriously damaged faith in the brand, RIM will be welcoming the New Year with open arms and hopes for a brighter future. BlackBerry have even approached rival manufacturers regarding licensing their new operating system, BlackBerry 10, which has been delayed until 2012, again giving concerns to the company’s future.
These failings have caused competitors to start eyeing up the weakened RIM as a potential acquisition whilst the price could be low.
With the newly formed partnership of Nokia and Microsoft looking to make waves in the smartphone market, senior bosses have been hinting towards a possible interest in acquiring the Canadian phone manufacturer reports the Wall Street Journal. With the new Nokia Lumia phone not taking the market by storm as anticipated, the Nokia/Microsoft collaboration will no doubt be pleased to see BlackBerry struggling.
Reuters also reported that Amazon had also made a play for RIM, to become a full service business device provider with their tablet PC, e-readers and with the acquisition smartphones too. The offer presented via an investment bank was subsequently rejected by RIM as they wanted to remain independent and wanted to weather the recent storm with hopes of brighter skies on the other side.
Whatever happens to RIM over the next 12 months they will be eyeing up the New Year with a mix of trepidation and hope as to what may come. Whether that will be a great turnaround in fortunes or accepting a buyout offer will be something we shall have to wait and see.
