The announcement by NVidia of the development of a powerful quad-core Tegra 3 processor chip has set the mobile world alight with speculation as to who will be the first to release a super-powerful quad-core phone.
Initial reports and leaked images appear to indicate that HTC would be first past the post with the HTC Edge. The Edge is set to have a huge 4.7- inch touchscreen and this monster handset would seem to have put HTC ahead of the game.
As you’d expect, this has forced the other big mobile players to sit up and take notice and it has been reported by Digitimes that Samsung, LG and Motorola are looking to incorporate the new processor chip into their future models.
NVidia’s Tegra 3 announcement promises up to three times better graphics than the Tegra 2, lower power consumption and PC like performance. All in all, this latest offering takes the mobile phone and tablet experience to the next level. The lines continue to blur between the mobile phone and laptop/netbook functionalities and this powerful new chip will take mobile phones that one step closer to allowing us to leave the laptop at home.
As to which manufacturer will be the first to get their quad-core phone onto the market, only time will tell. However, what is clear is that the first we will see of these phones will not be until 2012.
With most leaps and new buzz technology in the mobile market, the Mobile World Congress is the stage of choice for big releases, so next year’s conference should be the platform for revealing the winner of the quad-core race.
