Overstretched Brits 'won't give up on holidays'

Overstretched Brits 'won't give up on holidays' Britons dreaming of exotic holidays this year are still intent on getting a break, despite gloomy economic forecasts.

This is according to Francis Tuke, spokesperson fro the Association of British Travel Agents, who said that the expected stark decline in holiday bookings has not occurred.

"We know from previous recessions and difficult times that holidays are the last things people are prepared to give up. Nowadays, with the huge range of choices when it comes to holidays, people can pick ones that will suit their pocket," she said.

A recent poll of around 2,000 people by American Express Travellers Cheques found that 80 per cent of Britons are not willing to give up their summer break even though they may be feeling the pinch due to the rising cost of food and fuel.

Destinations for luxury holidays such as America and South Africa are particularly popular due to the strength of the pound against their respective currencies.

Earlier this month, Abbey Credit Cards warned holidaymakers that paying for items in pounds when abroad could see holidaymakers racking up extra charges, despite popular opinion that it will save people money.

The Association of British Travel Agents represents over 6,000 travel agencies and 850 tour operations throughout the British Isles.
