Brits heading on hols in record numbers, say agents

The bug for travelling abroad at Christmas appears to have infected greater numbers of Brits than ever before, according to one travel organisation.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), there will be 3.5 million people leaving the freezing UK weather behind and heading abroad over the festive period - the highest number yet.

"This is always a peak time for travel as people make the most of the bank holidays and once again there are a record number traveling," said Justin Fleming, president of Abta.

Winter sun is a big draw for many, with holidaymakers choosing long-haul options such as Egypt, Goa and luxurious Dubai. Even those who prefer to spend their end-of-year holidays on the piste are considering far-flung destinations, with many looking to take advantage of the weak dollar and booking ski breaks in the US and Canada.

Even airport operator BAA recently claimed that long-haul destinations are more popular than ever this year, with New York proving to be the favourite destination for Christmas travellers at Heathrow Airport.

The company predicts that 2.7 million people will be heading elsewhere from its seven airports in England and Scotland.
