Apple's iPhone ranked fourth in US

The level of hunger for the iPhone among consumers in the US can be seen in the latest figures from a leading market research firm.

Strategy Analytics has been monitoring the US mobile phone market for the past three months and has calculated that Apple's sought-after handset is the fourth most popular among consumers.

According to the firm's stats, almost 1.1 million iPhones were delivered to US tech fans via Apple and AT&T outlets, AppleInsider reports.

"Although the iPhone hasn't had an expansionary impact in the market, the iPhone has quickly assumed a leading market share position and raised the ante for smart devices," said Barry Gilbert, a vice president at Strategy Analytics.

"The sales trajectory we are observing with the iPhone could make it the top-selling device in the US over the next one to two quarters."

Mr Gilbert's colleague David Kerr added some interesting facts about the profile of the typical iPhone buyer.

Upwardly mobile with a six-figure household income, most iPhone buyers appear to be aged between 20 and 30, he said. However, almost a quarter are aged between 50 and 60.

According to the LA Times, more than a half a million of Apple's first phone were sold during the first weekend of general sale.
