Buying classic clothing 'better in the long run'
Brits would do better to emulate the buying habits of Parisian and Italian women when it comes to fashion, it has been claimed.Antony Waller, PR manager for the People Tree, said that while the current trend is for high fashion, throwaway clothing, people should think about buying something that will last season upon season if they wish to save money.
"Purchasing mid and higher end clothing that is higher quality and lasts longer makes better financial and social sense in the long-term," he argued.
Recent research carried out by Mintel found that 70 per cent of Britons said they love a bargain, while 30 per cent want to pay as little as they possible can for clothes.
As a result of a boom in sales at discounted stores like Primark and Asda, the cheap fashion industry has grown to a value of £6.3 billion, up 45 per cent between 2002 and 2007 alone.
Anyone wishing to lessen the impact of their shopping on the environment could also consider shopping at vintage stores or charity outlets.
Spencer Madan-Meyers, evening wear style adviser at House of Fraser, told the Independent earlier this month that bargain hunters should seek second hand shops in affluent areas for the best cast-offs.
