'Don't get complacent about card fraud'
A spokesperson from UK payments association Apacs has warned UK consumers not to get complacent when it comes to credit and debit cards, pointing out that fraud is still a potential threat to Britons. The unnamed source said that the simplest measures are likely to be the most effective when it comes to preventing fraudsters from gaining access to your money and offered some tips to keep important details secure.
She said that consumers should always shield their pin number when using ATMs or portable chip and pin devices, as well as ensuring that they check banks statements to highlight any suspicious transactions.
"It's about reminding people about the simple things they can do to enhance the security measures that are already in place. This goes back to being mindful of your cards," the spokesperson said.
According to a survey by Which?, one-third of respondents said they had fallen victim to theft from their bank accounts or credit cards.
Meanwhile, research by security firm CPP earlier this year found that London is the worst location for credit and debt card fraud and theft. Twenty per cent of Londoners say that they have had their cards stolen before and 28 per cent have been a victim of credit card fraud.
