Award success for Gavin and Stacey



Award success for Gavin and Stacey BBC Three comedy Gavin and Stacey won the coveted Audience award at this year's Bafta Television Awards held in London.

It held off challenges from Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent to pick up the award that was voted for by members of the public.

Gavin and Stacey co-writer and co-star James Corden also won the Bafta for Best Comedy Performance.

Ruth Jones, actress and co-writer of Gavin and Stacey, said: "We didn't think at all that we were going to win this. Gavin and Stacey really seems to have been taken into people's hearts and we're really thrilled about it."

Other winners on the night included Harry Hill for Best Entertainment Performance for his ITV show Harry Hill's TV Burp, while Andrew Garfield was voted Best Actor for his role in Boy A and the Best Actress award went to Eileen Atkins for her role in Cranford.

The British Academy Television Awards have taken place since 1954 and aim to recognise individuals and groups who have made outstanding achievements in the medium.

The final award of the evening went to Bruce Forsyth who was given the Academy Fellowship, the highest accolade the Academy can offer.
