A cheeky wedding is on the cards

A cheeky wedding is on the cards Gabriela Irimia is set to marry Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik after he proposed to her in Italy, it has been reported.

According to Hello! magazine, Opik popped the question at the Trevi Fountain in Rome during a romantic getaway in the city. The couple are reportedly planning to tie the knot either next year or in 2010.

Irimia, who makes up one half of disco-pop duo The Cheeky Girls with her sister Monica, told the magazine of her delight at the proposal, to which she immediately agreed.

"[He] took a gorgeous little box from his pocket, got down on one knee and made his proposal. When I said yes he started to cry. Tears of joy poured out of his eyes. I couldn't cry, I was so happy that I just kept smiling and laughing," she said.

The Cheeky Girls shot to fame when they auditioned for a part in the group formed by the reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals. They performed The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum), written by their mother and manager, in front of judges including Simon Cowell and Pete Waterman.

Waterman was later quoted as saying that it was the worst act ever, but they were nevertheless signed up by Telstar Records and went on to enjoy chart success with the record, which peaked at number two in the charts in December 2002.
