Have a two-day booze sabbatical says the Government

Cut the booze out

Early in the New Year when many of us are counting the costs of the festive period in terms of finance and calories, it’s a given that many resolutions will include a pledge to cut down on the drinking.

Easier said than done for sure, but the Government is lending a helping hand by taking a fresh look at current UK alcohol guidelines and issuing fresh recommendations as to what constitutes healthy consumption.

The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has examined the guidelines and recommends “two alcohol-free days each week and clearer guidelines on drinking.” The Committee also considered how well current guidance matches alcohol consumption evidence and how the public receives such information.

Chris Sorek, Chief Executive of alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware said: “Drinkaware welcomes the committee's recommendation for greater efforts on helping people understand the unit guidelines and how to use them.

“While the committee recognises that public awareness of alcohol units is now high, it supports Drinkaware's evidence that more needs to be done to raise awareness of how many units are in alcoholic drinks.

“We welcome the proposed review’s emphasis on the importance of clearly communicating the guidelines and will be keen to contribute evidence from our work to support this.”
