Any new Dr Who film will feature Matt Smith and not a big name Hollywood star as the doctor, says Who producer Steven Moffatt.
Since Director David Yates, he of the Harry Potter franchise, let slip that he was working on a big screen adaption, rumours began to spread. Would Hollywood destroy the heart and soul of Dr Who? Would Smith transfer to the big screen?
However, Moffatt has dispelled such wild speculation. He said: “There are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment. If and when the movie happens it will need to star television's Doctor Who - and there's only ever one of those at a time."
Ant Hill, Dr Who expert and Editor of Marzipanic.com, said: “Doctor Who is, at its best, original and innovative. He remains an embodiment of the 1960s, where music, fashion and visual arts were breaking away from established trends. Today popular art is heavily driven by the desire to generate money and therefore originality and innovation are synonymous with risk. When investors and backers shape a Doctor Who film, will their motivation lie in originality and innovation or in maximising international ticket sales?”
Matt Smith has played the 11th Doctor for the last two years and will appear in the next series in 2012. The Doctor has previously been played on the big screen by Peter Cushing in two films made in the 1960s.
