Travel Well in Pregnancy
A holiday during pregnancy is a wonderful idea and can mean a much needed rest. However, it is important to plan your journey carefully and discuss your travel plans with a doctor in advance.
A Healthy Journey
During pregnancy you are slightly more at risk of DVT whilst travelling so try to exercise your legs at least once an hour during your journey. Wear comfortable loose clothing that will not restrict circulation. Shop on-line for Travel Socks, available from www.tightsplease.co.uk. These will help keep the blood flowing freely around your body. Also, to avoid dehydration limit alcohol and coffee and drink lots of water or fruit juice.
Adequate Travel Insurance
Double check that your travel insurance covers your "pre-existing" condition, so you are covered should any medical care be required.
Consider Malaria
If you can't avoid travelling to a malarial area, discuss suitable medication. Folic acid supplements are often recommended with anti-malarial tablets.
Vaccinations
When you are planning your holiday, discuss with your travel agent which countries require vaccination. Some of these destinations may not be suitable to visit during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Travel Plans
If you are planning on travelling for a long period of time during your pregnancy, remember that many airlines do not allow you to fly after 36 weeks on domestic flights and 34-35 weeks on international flights.
