Travel Insurance is Crucial for Skiers

As I write this, thousands of families are heading for a half term break to the ski slopes of Europe and beyond. Adequate travel insurance is absolutely crucial to the success of your holiday, as without it you could end up in big financial trouble. Skiing holidays are gaining in popularity all the time and can be one of the best family holidays, but it is a potentially risky sport. An injury sustained abroad can not only be painful, but extremely expensive and stressful if you do not have the right travel insurance.

This ski season has seen one of the warmest winters on record which means there are more rocks and lumps of ice on the pistes, and therefore a rise in the number of injuries. This week brings news of much longed-for snow arriving across Europe which should make things a little easier on the groomed slopes. But on the other side of the coin, this means more skiers are inclined to try difficult off-piste runs which could mean more injuries and potential insurance claims.

Staggeringly, resent research says that one in four travellers are heading to winter ski resorts with no travel insurance organised. Whilst losing out on a relatively minor claim such as missing luggage or a missed flight is annoying, the cost of medical treatment could be disastrous. Should an injury on the slope require a helicopter pick-up, without travel insurance, every penny of the cost has to be covered personally. On top of this are hospital bills, possibly an extra seat on the way home for a broken leg, or in serious cases an air ambulance home, which could mean costs rising to as much as £10,000.

Travel Insurance usually offers medical cover of between £1 million and £10 million pounds, with customers often expected to pay the first £50.00. Simply for peace of mind, travel insurance is the first thing you should buy when you book your holiday.
